Why FutureSafe Made Petra Its Front Line for M365 BEC Protection

FutureSafe was already running a strong stack, then a partner brought Petra to the table.

"We were using Blackpoint, Blackpoint Cloud Response, and we felt pretty good with what we were getting," says Jason. "And as often happens, one of my clients came to me and said, 'you gotta look at this platform.'"

Their initial Petra Scan surfaced something very interesting: a compromise that Petra had caught in the partner's environment that Blackpoint Cloud Response had missed.

FutureSafe's typical vendor evaluation runs three months. Petra got fast-tracked.

"We did some initial discovery using Petra, and what we found was all that forensic detail from that compromise that Blackpoint missed that you showed [our MSP partner] and they showed me in detail. For me, that was a buy-it-now epiphany."

The Differentiator

What closed the deal is how Petra surfaces the full story around the incident.

Jason is candid about what he expected from a new ITDR. Faster detection and broader coverage are nice, but his clients (MSPs themselves) need something they can hand to a non-security customer and walk them through.

"The differentiation for us, and the reason we decided to go with Petra after our evaluation, was how quickly you guys picked things up, and how you laid out the storyline."

That presentation, Jason says, is the part nobody else has solved.

"When [our MSP partner] showed it to me, I immediately connected to the fact that Petra built the storyline in a way that nobody else has ever done. In a way that we could immediately and quickly and intuitively understand what you discovered, what you did, and why you did it. Nobody else I've ever used has gotten close."

Once he saw it, he started using a specific phrase for it in conversations with peers.

"Petra is a generation ahead of anybody else in identity security. What I mean by a generation ahead is the machine learning, the discovery, and how the data is presented is what I expect other platforms to have in the next generation. You guys are already there."

For Jason, clear attack timelines and forensics is what translates directly to the sales motion at his MSP partners.

"The way the console looks, the way I can show a client exactly what happened, the way you'll show in detail what other MDRs missed, that closes business every time."

Petra Performance

Since adopting Petra, FutureSafe has consistently seen Petra catch attacks Blackpoint Cloud Response missed.

The original compromise wasn't a one-off. Since FutureSafe started running both tools, Jason says they've continued to see Petra surface attacks that Blackpoint Cloud Response didn't catch, and surface them faster.

"Particularly compared to Blackpoint Cloud Response, you guys have consistently done better and consistently been faster."

Jason sent the original missed-compromise case back to Blackpoint after Petra found it.

"We have a very good relationship with Blackpoint. I sent them the first case they missed and they came back and said, 'yeah, we missed it, and Petra's done a great job.' Those were Blackpoint's exact words. I'm telling you, Petra is a generation ahead."

The Takeaway

Jason has a specific point of view on where MSPs should be spending their security budget right now, and he repeats it in nearly every conversation with FutureSafe partners.

"All the threats are moving to BEC. I tell people: change your budget spend. Don't spend as much on infrastructure security. There's not a ton of ransomware cases happening in that direction. Have good coverage, but don't overload it. Move your spend to BEC protection. That's where attacks are happening."
